The Cold Wars is an enormously informative history of the development of the fascinating subject of superconductivity -- Elihu Abrahams, Rutgers University

The quest to reach it has lured scientists for several centuries revealing interesting and unexpected phenomena along the way. Among the most peculiar of matter’s strange behaviors is superconductivity¾simply described as electric current without resistance¾discovered in 1911.  With the 1986 discovery that, contrary to previous expectations, superconductivity was possible at temperatures well above absolute zero, research into practical applications has flourished. The authors provide a rare look at the scientists and their research, mostly little known beyond a small coterie of specialists. Cold Wars will be of equal interest to students of physics and the history of science and technology, and general readers interested in story behind this remarkable phenomenon. . There is no temperature below absolute zero, and, in fact, zero itself is impossible to reach. Superconductivity has turned out to be a fruitful arena for developments in condensed matter physics, which have proved applicable in particle physics and cosmology as well.Cold Wars tells the history of superconductivity, providing perspective on the development of the field and its relationship with the rest of physic

Jean Matricon taught physics at the Universite Denis Diderot (Paris VII), where he conducted theoretical research on superconductivity and other topics in condensed matter physics.

. Charles Glashausser is a professor of physics at Rutgers University and chair of the Division of Nuclear Physics of the American Physical Society. Georges Waysand has focused his experimental research on superconductivity, most recently at Universite Denis Diderot (Paris VII), and at a spin-off underground physics labo

I was a little skeptical at first, but as I read the opening pages of this very well written reflection I was intrigued. The book is written in a alluring style, with a superb translation by Glashausser that will be of interest to physicist and non-physicist alike, and tells the tale of trial and tribulation that led to the understanding of superconductivity.. Leading from the heart is not easy and as the author puts it so eloquently, it is downright frightening. Hardly any new information, almost none insight or analysis, and it gives close to none of technical insight or technical history. Having read some books by TR and about TR, I was always curious to know more about TR the enigma. Flying Machines, one of the DK Eyewitness Guides.Nahum makes a convincing case for his main point that, in fact, the then British government was not at all indifferent to Whittle's foresight and energy and supported him and his colleagues as far as reasonably possible in a critical time when the needs of a conventional propeller-driven air force under intense attack from Germany had to be balanced with Whittle's demands for desperately needed funds to finance long-term and still experimental weapons such a
